I've been told by my uncle, that he has just received a letter from UBI to all ex-tarbs customers that they can sighn up for UBI, including info on buying a set top box from a recomended supplier if they do not have a Tarbs Box.

Why wouldn't UBI start selling their "New Boxes" since they have their new transponder almost ready to go?

I'm not being smart, just curious.

Interesting can you scan the letter and upload ot somewhere?
Posted By: Liski Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Sun 05 Mar 2006 05:27:PM
VCValiant,

The new transponder and a change in UBI's encryption are unrelated.

If you want to watch UBI now it would be best to get an MDS IRD (most ex-TARBS subscribers should still have it) now and subscribe. All paying subscribers will get a free upgrade to the new UBI IRD when they are released.

So if you wish to wait for the new UBI IRD then wait but if you want to watch now it's best to subscribe with the MDS IRD.

How much would the box cost for 'new' subscribers liski?

Those details haven't been released as yet.

Sorry for the delay in replying boys, but I'm still waiting for my Uncle to bring me the letter, I was at his house that evening when I read it. He said he still has it so I'll post it as soon as possible.

VCValiant,

Please do not post any UBI material due to copyright issues.

Which part of the letter would you like posted?
Posted By: ShaRp Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Tue 07 Mar 2006 10:33:PM
never heard that ads have copyright.

others want their ads to be distributed widely UBI keep them secret.
Posted By: Liski Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Tue 07 Mar 2006 10:52:PM
This is not an AD this is a letter to an individual.

what i dont understand is how UBI continually dodge the real issues and talk in riddles.

wouldn't this hurt business rather than letting "secrets" go.

now with the new box, it is "Coming Soon" but for me thats not good enough to subscribe, i'm not gonna pay close to $300 for something that is not gonna of any use.
Posted By: LAZER Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 06:39:PM
You end up paying for the box if you join now or if you join when new encryption comes in so whats the difference ??

That letter shows nothing new to what is already known out there
Posted By: Liski Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 06:40:PM
gavros,

That is your opioin and that is fine. If you wish to wait to subscribe that that is also fine.

It's been explained and said many times by myself. If your a valid (paying) UBI subscriber you will recieve a new IRD/SC free of charge.

So for example:
- You purchase a MDS IRD
- You subscribe to UBI WORLD TV
- You watch UBI WORLD TV
- Your turn to change to the new system
- You're supplied with a new IRD/SC FREE OF CHARGE
- You now have an MDS IRD which you no longer need
- You now have a new UBI IRD and you continue watching

Also remember that if you decide to join when the new system is in place you will still have to purchase a UBI IRD.

Only valid (paying) UBI WORLD TV subscribers get a free UBI IRD.

Simple?
Posted By: ShaRp Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 06:43:PM
it's good to subscribe now if you already have an MDS box. if you dont have one, i agree, it's not logical to buy a future door stopper as it looks like new boxes will be cheaper than MDS boxes.

maybe ubi shouldn't have leaked this info at all. we'll see what happens.
Posted By: Liski Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 06:50:PM
Maybe the UBI IRDs will be cheaper but at the moment the offer is Free Activation + Free First Month so that is already a saving of $109.90

No one knows if this offer will be available later on – I doubt it will be.

So subscribe now with an MDS IRD and get a $109.90 saving.

[ 09. With all this stuff about boxes etc I wonder if UBI wil still offer former TARBS customers, who payed subscription in advance, the air time that they are due? As was promised previously. Or will this all be recovered by making the former customers pay for extras or new requirements?
Posted By: Liski Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 10:01:PM
sikman,

The "Goodwill Guesture" could end at any time - Now is the best time to join!

If someone waits and decides to join later on they will have to:

1. Buy a new UBI IRD
2. Might not have Free Activation + Free First Month
3. Might not have Goodwill Guesture offer
Posted By: apsattv Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 10:57:PM
4. Tell UBI they must be kidding and join another company
Posted By: Liski Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Thu 09 Mar 2006 11:01:PM
apsattv,

If you have nothing constructive to add or say please don't bother replying at all.

Problem is that Irdeto STBs are much cheaper than the old TARBS STB. Irdeto boxes retail for less than $200 on Hot Chip and Kristal and wholsale at less than $130. Select is selling its Irdeto box and card for $175(?). You can get a full install, dish, card, STB and installation for under $400 these days. And what's with this activation fee? Pay $50 to TARMS to take down your name and address and send you a bill?

So, if you spend $300 on a TARBS box, less the $109 "special discount" (well, really ony $59) - , you will barely break even.

and your point is ....
Posted By: TV_Nerd Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Sat 11 Mar 2006 01:24:AM
It's not very good value. You would be better off waiting for UBI to comvert to Irdeto, the STB's are much cheaper, the CA is much better and the uncertainty is cleared up.

TARBS has such a bad track record, who knows if supplying new STB's to everyone won't knock them back into recievership?
Posted By: LAZER Re: UBI MAIL OUT!!! - Sat 11 Mar 2006 01:33:AM
Nothing official has been released about Irdeto switch over yet its going to happen that we do know but the specifics of it have not been released yet so i think its best of to wait til we know the full details before jumping the gun and making all these assumptions
