Moderate magnitude 4.1 earthquake 28 km southeast of Katerini, Greece4.1 quake 1 Feb 12:53 pm (GMT +2) The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in Greece near Katerini, Pieria, Central Macedonia, only 19 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Wednesday, February 1st, 2023, at 12:53 pm local time at a shallow depth of 16 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.4, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.4, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Néoi Poroi (pop. 630) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Katerini (pop. 53,300) 28 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kalamaria (pop. 91,600) located 57 km from the epicenter, Pylaia (pop. 23,500) 60 km away, Thessaloniki (pop. 354,300) 63 km away, Sykiés (pop. 45,000) 64 km away, Neapoli (pop. 27,100) 65 km away, Polichni (pop. 39,800) 66 km away, and Véroia (pop. 44,500) 67 km away.
