Moderate 4.4 quake hits near Gisborne, Gisborne District, New Zealand4.4 quake 13 Feb 7:45 pm (GMT +13) An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 26 minutes ago 25 km northwest of Gisborne, New Zealand, New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 21.8 km beneath the epicenter near Gisborne, Gisborne District, New Zealand, early evening on Monday, February 13th, 2023, at 7:45 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Patutahi (pop. 390) located 15 km from the epicenter, Gisborne (pop. 34,300) 25 km away, Tiniroto (pop. 1,500) 26 km away, and Wainui (pop. 1,700) 31 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wairoa (pop. 4,300) located 60 km from the epicenter, Raupunga (pop. 1,200) 68 km away, and Whakatane (pop. 18,600) 95 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
