A moderately shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported in the morning near Blenheim, Marlborough District, Marlborough, New Zealand.
According to New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the quake hit on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023, at 10:11 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 46.5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake.
