Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Blenheim, Marlborough District, Marlborough, New Zealand4.9 quake 22 Feb 10:11 am (GMT +13) A moderately shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported in the morning near Blenheim, Marlborough District, Marlborough, New Zealand. According to New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the quake hit on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2023, at 10:11 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 46.5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Wairau Valley (pop. 2,200) located 7 km from the epicenter, Renwick (pop. 2,600) 20 km away, Blenheim (pop. 26,600) 30 km away, Stoke (pop. 19,800) 39 km away, Tahunanui (pop. 2,900) 40 km away, Atawhai (pop. 2,900) 41 km away, and Picton (pop. 4,800) 44 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Karori (pop. 15,700) located 99 km from the epicenter, Wellington (pop. 381,900) 102 km away, and Lower Hutt (pop. 101,200) 116 km away.
