Small earthquake of magnitude 3.4 just reported 55 km northeast of Athens, Greece3.4 quake 15 Dec 12:43 pm (GMT +2) An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 occurred only 25 minutes ago 55 km northeast of Athens, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Athens, Nomarchía Athínas, Attica, Greece, around noon on Thursday, December 15th, 2022, at 12:43 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Zarakes (pop. 940) located 1 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nea Makri (pop. 15,600) located 31 km from the epicenter, Kifissia (pop. 47,300) 43 km away, Gerakas (pop. 29,900) 44 km away, Marousi (pop. 72,300) 45 km away, Agia Paraskevi (pop. 59,700) 46 km away, Chalandri (pop. 74,200) 47 km away, and Iraklion (pop. 49,600) 48 km away. In Nea Ionia (pop. 67,100, 49 km away), and Athens (pop. 664,000, 55 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
