Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Nea Ionia, Magnesia, Thessaly, Greece4.2 quake 8 Mar 12:29 am (GMT +2) Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Nea Ionia, Magnesia, Thessaly, Greece. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Monday 8 March 2021 at 12:29 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Frama (pop. 26) located 13 km from the epicenter, Pefkochori (pop. 1,900) 20 km away, Pefkochori (pop. 1,900) 20 km away, and Neos Marmaras (pop. 3,200) 39 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nea Moudania (pop. 9,300) located 49 km from the epicenter, Polygyros (pop. 10,000) 61 km away, Nea Kallikrateia (pop. 7,200) 65 km away, Nea Ionia (pop. 32,700) 70 km away, and Volos (pop. 86,000) 70 km away.
