Real Zaragoza 2-1 Fenerbahce

ZARAGOZA, February 24 (UEFA Cup) - Real Zaragoza booked their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup with a comfortable aggregate victory over a disappointing Fenerbahce at La Romareda.

The Spanish side had laid the foundations for their progress into the next round with a superb 1-0 victory in Turkey last week and their passage was virtually sealed in the 11th minute of the return leg when Luciano Galletti whipped in a superb free-kick.

In truth, Fenerbahce, for whom mercurial French striker Nicolas Anelka once again failed to impress, struggled to find any rhythm and only threatened Luis Garcia Conde in the Zaragoza goal in the second half.

After scoring the early goal, the home side were content to soak up what little pressure Christoph Daum's team created, and their tactics worked perfectly as Savio hit a second goal with 15 minutes left.

Alex's late strike came too late to change the outcome of the match.

Fenerbahce, leaders in their domestic league, needed to keep things tight in the early stages - but only 11 minutes had passed before they conceded the opening goal.

Tricky wideman Savio was upended just outside the area and from the resulting free-kick, Galletti curled a superb shot inside Rustu Recber's left-hand post.

The hosts proceeded to dominate the rest of the opening period but, in a half bereft of clear-cut goalscoring chances, could not add to their lead.

David Villa could have allowed Victor Munoz's side to breathe a little easier if he had finished off a 47th-minute chance but Turkey international Rustu denied the striker with a smart save.

Tuncay Sanli, brought off the bench by Daum in the first half, finally made Luis Garcia produce a save on the hour mark.

Fenerbahce then made their second attacking substitution when Holland striker Pierre van Hooijdonk was thrown on to partner Anelka and add a greater presence to their frontline.

But it made no difference as the contest was put to bed with quarter of an hour remaining when Savio, a handful all game, lobbed the stranded Rustu.

A period of late pressure resulted in Alex netting a consolation for the visitors after 87 minutes but it was too little too late for Fenerbahce.
