Light magnitude 4.2 quake hits 28 km southeast of Mahur, India after midnightThe European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in India near Mahur, Dima Hasao, Assam, only 20 minutes ago. The earthquake hit after midnight on Thursday 14 January 2021 at 12:15 am local time at a shallow depth of 15 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mahur (pop. 7,200) located 28 km from the epicenter, Hāflong (pop. 40,000) 32 km away, and Maibong (pop. 8,400) 39 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Silchar (pop. 152,400) located 47 km from the epicenter, Badarpur (pop. 11,000) 66 km away, Hailākāndi (pop. 31,000) 75 km away, Mayāng Imphāl (pop. 22,200) 76 km away, Lāla (pop. 10,900) 78 km away, and Churāchāndpur (pop. 47,800) 82 km away.
