Magnitude 4.6 earthquake strikes near Batang, Central Java, IndonesiaAn earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 16 minutes ago 59 km north of Batang, Indonesia, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported.
The quake hit at a great depth of 556 km beneath the epicenter near Batang, Central Java, Indonesia, in the evening on Wednesday 13 January 2021 at 9:35 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Batang (pop. 115,500, 59 km away), Mlonggo (pop. 33,500, 65 km away), and Tayu (pop. 26,400, 81 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
