Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes near Glyfada, Phocis, Central Greece, GreeceA magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Glyfada, Phocis, Central Greece, Greece, was reported only 14 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 13 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Wednesday 13 January 2021 at 11:40 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Glyfada (pop. 480) located 3 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Trizonia (pop. 64) located 4 km from the epicenter, Chania (pop. 62) 4 km away, Spilia (pop. 45) 5 km away, Kamarai (pop. 1,200) 11 km away, Rododafni (pop. 2,600) 14 km away, Aigio (pop. 20,400) 16 km away, Nafpaktos (pop. 13,400) 19 km away, and Patrai (pop. 168,000) 31 km away.
