Moderate 4.6 quake hits near Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa, Municipio de Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Departamento de Escuintla, Guatemala 4.6 quake 30 Jan 12:56 pm (GMT -6) A shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported around noon near Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa, Municipio de Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Departamento de Escuintla, Guatemala.
According to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the quake hit on Saturday 30 January 2021 at 12:56 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Champerico (pop. 7,800) located 55 km from the epicenter, and Pueblo Nuevo Tiquisate (pop. 18,200) 58 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Retalhuleu (pop. 36,700) located 75 km from the epicenter, Mazatenango (pop. 44,100) 77 km away, Nuevo San Carlos (pop. 19,200) 82 km away, Chicacao (pop. 20,400) 85 km away, Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa (pop. 62,100) 88 km away, and Coatepeque (pop. 45,700) 96 km away.
