Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake 49 km southeast of Salina Cruz, Mexico 4.3 quake 12 Feb 2:06 pm (GMT -6) Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 4.3 quake in Mexico near Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, only 24 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Friday 12 February 2021 at 2:06 pm local time at a shallow depth of 17 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Barrio Nuevo (pop. 33) located 44 km from the epicenter, San Mateo del Mar (pop. 5,700) 45 km away, and Colonia Juarez (pop. 2,800) 46 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) located 49 km from the epicenter, San Francisco del Mar Viejo (pop. 4,000) 57 km away, San Dionisio del Mar (pop. 3,100) 60 km away, San Blas Atempa (pop. 12,000) 66 km away, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 42,100) 66 km away, and Juchitan de Zaragoza (pop. 74,800) 70 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
