Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 44 km southeast of Panguipulli, Chile in the morning 4.7 quake 11 Feb 11:01 am (GMT -3) A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Panguipulli, Provincia de Valdivia, Los Rios Region, Chile, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Thursday 11 February 2021 at 11:01 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Panguipulli (pop. 16,300) located 44 km from the epicenter, San Martin de los Andes (pop. 23,500) 57 km away, Pucon (pop. 27,000) 63 km away, Villarrica (pop. 31,600) 69 km away, and Loncoche (pop. 15,600) 83 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Valdivia (pop. 133,400) located 116 km from the epicenter, and Valdivia (pop. 133,400) 116 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
