Small magnitude 3.1 quake hits 8 km southeast of Vannes, France in the evening

An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred in the evening on Wednesday 17 February 2021 at 8:31 pm local time near Vannes, Morbihan, Bretagne, France, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Theix (pop. 5,400) located 1 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Surzur (pop. 2,600) located 6 km from the epicenter, Vannes (pop. 54,000) 8 km away, and Saint-Avé (pop. 8,900) 8 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arradon (pop. 5,200) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Sarzeau (pop. 7,100) 14 km away. In Guérande (pop. 16,500, 38 km away), and Lorient (pop. 58,100, 54 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
