Small magnitude 3.0 quake hits 6 miles northeast of Rancho Cucamonga, California, United States late at night 3.0 quake 28 Feb 10:17 pm (GMT -8) A very shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake was reported late at night near Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino County, California, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday 28 February 2021 at 10:17 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5.8 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rancho Cucamonga (pop. 175,200) located 6 miles from the epicenter, Upland (pop. 76,400) 8 miles away, Fontana (pop. 207,500) 9 miles away, Ontario (pop. 171,200) 10 miles away, Rialto (pop. 103,100) 12 miles away, Chino (pop. 85,600) 14 miles away, Pomona (pop. 153,300) 14 miles away, and San Bernardino (pop. 216,100) 16 miles away. In Los Angeles (pop. 3,971,900, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
