Small earthquake of magnitude 3.6 just reported 46 km east of Aurillac, France 3.6 quake 20 Mar 7:05 pm (GMT +1) A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Aurillac, Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, was reported only 15 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Saturday 20 March 2021 at 7:05 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9. A third agency, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Chaudes-Aigues (pop. 1000) located 1 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Neuvéglise (pop. 1000) located 8 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Saint-Flour (pop. 7,500) located 20 km from the epicenter, Saint-Chély-d'Apcher (pop. 4,200) 21 km away, Marvejols (pop. 6,100) 40 km away, Arpajon-sur-Cère (pop. 5,700) 45 km away, Langeac (pop. 4,000) 46 km away, and Aurillac (pop. 34,700) 46 km away.
