Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near San Marcos, Municipio de San Marcos, Departamento de San Marcos, Guatemala 4.4 quake 29 Mar 8:38 am (GMT -6) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Guatemala near San Marcos, Municipio de San Marcos, Departamento de San Marcos, only 28 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday 29 March 2021 at 8:38 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 205.4 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In San Miguel Ixtahuacan (pop. 3,700, 3 km away), Comitancillo (pop. 19,700, 21 km away), San Pedro Sacatepéquez (pop. 40,000, 34 km away), San Marcos (pop. 25,100, 35 km away), Jacaltenango (pop. 34,100, 44 km away), Momostenango (pop. 31,700, 47 km away), Ostuncalco (pop. 28,900, 48 km away), San Francisco (pop. 54,500, 51 km away), and Quetzaltenango (pop. 132,200, 56 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
