Moderate yet deep magnitude 5.4 quake hits 110 km west of Tupiza, Bolivia in the morning5.4 quake 1 Jun 8:42 am (GMT -4) Bolivia was shaken near Tupiza, Sud Chichas, Departamento de Potosi, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 only 9 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 222 km beneath the epicenter near Tupiza, Sud Chichas, Departamento de Potosi, Bolivia, in the morning on Tuesday 1 June 2021 at 8:42 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Barbara (pop. 2,400) located 104 km from the epicenter, Tupiza (pop. 22,200) 110 km away, Uyuni (pop. 10,300) 124 km away, and Villazon (pop. 30,300) 134 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
