Small magnitude 3.0 quake hits 13 miles southwest of Santa Monica, California, United States in the morning3.0 quake 31 May 7:03 am (GMT -7) An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the morning on Monday 31 May 2021 at 7:03 am local time near Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 6.3 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Malibu (pop. 13,000) located 8 miles from the epicenter, and Santa Monica (pop. 93,200) 13 miles away. In Woodland Hills (pop. 70,000, 17 miles away), Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300, 18 miles away), Redondo Beach (pop. 68,200, 19 miles away), Hawthorne (pop. 88,500, 20 miles away), Inglewood (pop. 111,700, 20 miles away), Torrance (pop. 148,500, 21 miles away), Los Angeles (pop. 3,971,900, 27 miles away), and Long Beach (pop. 474,100, 31 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
