Just 9 minutes ago, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early morning on Monday 31 May 2021 at 2:06 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Aspen Springs (pop. 65) located 7 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mammoth Lakes (pop. 7,900) located 12 miles from the epicenter, West Bishop (pop. 2,600) 23 miles away, and Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (pop. 2,600) 25 miles away.
