Moderate 4.4 quake hits near Nicosia, Cyprus 4.4 quake Frodisia, 63 km west of Nicosia, Cyprus, 31 May 9:23 am (GMT +3) A moderately shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported in the morning near Nicosia, Cyprus.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday 31 May 2021 at 9:23 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kampos (pop. 450) located 7 km from the epicenter, Kato Pýrgos (pop. 1,200) 11 km away, Lefka (pop. 7,800) 16 km away, Kakopetria (pop. 1,300) 23 km away, Morfou (pop. 14,800) 31 km away, and Astromeritis (pop. 2,500) 33 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Geroskipou Municipality (pop. 8,300) located 41 km from the epicenter, Limassol (pop. 154,000) 55 km away, Strovolos (pop. 67,900) 60 km away, and Nicosia (pop. 200,500) 63 km away.
