Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 12 km south of Hualien City, Taiwan 4.8 quake 11 Jun 1:12 pm (GMT +8) Just 14 minutes ago, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan. The tremor was recorded around noon on Friday 11 June 2021 at 1:12 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 2 km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 12 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puli (pop. 86,400) located 67 km from the epicenter, Lugu (pop. 19,600) 89 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 96 km away, and Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 96 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nantou City (pop. 105,700) located 97 km from the epicenter, Yilan (pop. 94,200) 100 km away, and Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 100 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
