Significant 6.0 quake hits near South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, California, USA
6.0 quake Antelope Valley, CA, 8 Jul 3:49 pm (GMT -7)

Just 8 hours ago, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Thursday 8 July 2021 at 3:49 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 4.7 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.0 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Topaz Ranch Estates (pop. 1,500) located 16 miles from the epicenter, and Smith Valley (pop. 1,600) 21 miles away.
In Gardnerville Ranchos (pop. 11,300) located 29 miles from the epicenter, Gardnerville (pop. 5,700) 33 miles away, South Lake Tahoe (pop. 21,700) 39 miles away, Sparks (pop. 96,100) 72 miles away, and Reno (pop. 241,400) 73 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Folsom (pop. 76,400) located 91 miles from the epicenter.
