A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, California, USA, was reported 7 hours ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Thursday 8 July 2021 at 3:50 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.9.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Gardnerville (pop. 5,700) located 32 miles from the epicenter, South Lake Tahoe (pop. 21,700) 39 miles away, Sparks (pop. 96,100) 72 miles away, and Reno (pop. 241,400) 72 miles away.
