An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 15 minutes ago 82 km southeast of Iquique, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 91 km beneath the epicenter near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile, late at night on Tuesday 20 July 2021 at 10:02 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Iquique (pop. 227,500) located 82 km from the epicenter.
