Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 20 km southeast of Iraklion, Greece in the evening 4.2 quake 20 Jul 8:44 pm (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the evening near Iraklion, Heraklion, Crete, Greece. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Tuesday 20 July 2021 at 8:44 pm local time at a shallow depth of 13.6 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.3. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Arkalochori (pop. 3,500) located 3 km from the epicenter, Thrapsanon (pop. 1,500) 5 km away, Kasteli (pop. 1,800) 10 km away, Iraklion (pop. 137,200) 20 km away, Néa Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 20 km away, Gazi (pop. 12,600) 23 km away, and Malia (pop. 4,300) 24 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aghios Nicolaos (pop. 11,400) located 44 km from the epicenter, and Rethymnon (pop. 32,500) 72 km away.
