Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Sofia, Sofia-Capital, Bulgaria 4.2 quake 18 Aug 4:14 pm (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Sofia, Sofia-Capital, Bulgaria. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at 4:14 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Gorna Malina (pop. 1,500) located 1 km from the epicenter, and Elin Pelin (pop. 7,400) 9 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Botevgrad (pop. 20,900) located 24 km from the epicenter, Etropole (pop. 11,000) 29 km away, Ihtiman (pop. 14,200) 31 km away, Sofia (pop. 1,152,600) 31 km away, and Samokov (pop. 26,800) 42 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Panagyurishte (pop. 19,400) located 46 km from the epicenter, and Dupnitsa (pop. 34,800) 68 km away.
