Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Puli, Nantou, Taiwan 4.4 quake 18 Aug 3:22 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 14 minutes ago 30 km southeast of Puli, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 34 km beneath the epicenter near Puli, Nantou, Taiwan, early morning on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at 3:22 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puli (pop. 86,400) located 30 km from the epicenter, and Lugu (pop. 19,600) 34 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Nantou City (pop. 105,700) located 49 km from the epicenter, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 49 km away, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 56 km away, Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 59 km away, Hualien City (pop. 350,500) 60 km away, and Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 63 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
