Small 3.0 quake hits near Alaska City, Anchorage, Alaska, USA 3.0 quake 19 Aug 7:02 pm (GMT -8) A magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Alaska City, Anchorage, Alaska, USA, was reported only 10 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 12 miles beneath the epicenter early evening on Thursday 19 August 2021 at 7:02 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Moose Pass (pop. 220) located 9 miles from the epicenter. In Girdwood (pop. 2,300, 27 miles away), Bear Creek (pop. 2,000, 30 miles away), Seward (pop. 2,800, 34 miles away), Sterling (pop. 5,600, 42 miles away), Alaska City (pop. 298,700, 45 miles away), and Elmendorf Air Force Base (pop. 6,600, 46 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
