Significant 5.1 quake hits near Dededo Village, Dededo, Guam 5.1 quake 25 Aug 12:47 am (GMT +10) Guam was shaken near Dededo Village, Dededo, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 19 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Dededo Village, Dededo, Guam, after midnight on Wednesday 25 August 2021 at 12:47 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Talofofo Village (pop. 3,200) located 84 km from the epicenter, Talofofo Village (pop. 3,200) 84 km away, Santa Rita (pop. 7,500) 92 km away, Barrigada Village (pop. 8,900) 93 km away, Barrigada Village (pop. 8,900) 93 km away, Tamuning-Tumon-Harmon Village (pop. 19,700) 96 km away, San Ignacio de Agana * (pop. 1,100) 96 km away, Dededo Village (pop. 44,900) 96 km away, and Yigo Village (pop. 20,500) 96 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
