Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra, Indonesia 4.4 quake 29 Aug 8:05 pm (GMT +7) Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Indonesia near Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra, only 19 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Sunday 29 August 2021 at 8:05 pm local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 159 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ambarita (pop. 2,000) located 7 km from the epicenter, Tomok Bolon (pop. 10,000) 8 km away, Pematangsiantar (pop. 209,600) 34 km away, Tongging (pop. 16,000) 44 km away, Pekan Bahapal (pop. 40,000) 55 km away, Kabanjahe (pop. 57,200) 60 km away, and Berastagi (pop. 44,800) 67 km away. In Medan (pop. 1,751,000, 99 km away), the quake was probably not felt. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
