Significant magnitude 5.4 quake hits 19 km northeast of Puli, Taiwan early evening 5.4 quake 19 km north of Puli, Nantou, Taiwan, Sep 13, 2021 6:41 pm (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred only 16 minutes ago 19 km northeast of Puli, Taiwan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 42 km beneath the epicenter near Puli, Nantou, Taiwan, early evening on Monday, September 13th, 2021, at 6:41 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Puli (pop. 86,400) located 19 km from the epicenter, Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 34 km away, Zhongxing New Village (pop. 25,500) 39 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 43 km away, and Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 49 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 62 km from the epicenter, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 67 km away, Hsinchu (pop. 404,100) 75 km away, and Taipeh (pop. 7,871,900) 114 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
