Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake 12 km southwest of Santa Cruz de La Palma, Spain 4.3 quake 7 Oct 12:17 pm (GMT +1) An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred around noon on Thursday, October 7th, 2021, at 12:17 pm local time near Santa Cruz de La Palma, La Palma Island, Canary Islands, Spain, as reported by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mazo (pop. 4,800) located 4 km from the epicenter, Breña Baja (pop. 4,200) 6 km away, Brena Alta (pop. 7,100) 8 km away, El Paso (pop. 7,100) 12 km away, Santa Cruz de La Palma (pop. 17,100) 12 km away, Los Llanos de Aridane (pop. 20,800) 15 km away, Tazacorte (pop. 5,700) 16 km away, and Garachico (pop. 6,000) 23 km away.
