Magnitude 3.4 earthquake strikes near Covelo, Condado de Mendocino County, California, USA 3.4 quake 21 Dec 12:03 pm (GMT -8) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.4 quake in the United States near Covelo, Condado de Mendocino County, California, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Tuesday, December 21st, 2021, at 12:03 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0.6 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Covelo (pop. 1,300) located 2 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Laytonville (pop. 1,200) located 16 miles from the epicenter, Brooktrails (pop. 3,200) 26 miles away, and Willits (pop. 4,900) 28 miles away. In Fort Bragg (pop. 7,300, 40 miles away), and Ukiah (pop. 15,900, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
