Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Sablayan, Mindoro Occidental, Mimaropa, Philippines 5.1 quake 22 Dec 12:08 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 22 minutes ago 17 km east of Sablayan, Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 15 km beneath the epicenter near Sablayan, Mindoro Occidental, Mimaropa, Philippines, after midnight on Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021, at 12:08 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Sablayan (pop. 38,400) located 17 km from the epicenter, Ligaya (pop. 8,400) 22 km away, and Calintaan (pop. 11,500) 33 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mamburao (pop. 23,900) located 54 km from the epicenter, San Jose (pop. 118,800) 59 km away, Pinamalayan (pop. 43,500) 62 km away, Calapan (pop. 66,000) 68 km away, and Mansalay (pop. 23,000) 68 km away.
