Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 39 km west of Kargil, Pakistan after midnight 4.2 quake 28 Dec 12:41 am (GMT +5) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 10 minutes ago 39 km west of Kargil, Pakistan, India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Kargil, Ladakh, India, after midnight on Tuesday, December 28th, 2021, at 12:41 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kargil (pop. 13,800) located 39 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Skardu (pop. 2,100) located 79 km from the epicenter, Gāndarbal (pop. 16,300) 94 km away, Bandipura (pop. 32,000) 99 km away, and Srinagar (pop. 975,900) 99 km away.
