Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 100 km southwest of La Serena, Chile early morning 4.7 quake 10 Jan 4:06 am (GMT -3) A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near La Serena, Elqui, Coquimbo Region, Chile, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Monday, January 10th, 2022, at 4:06 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include La Serena (pop. 154,500) located 100 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
