Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 36 km south of Mito, Japan early morning 4.2 quake 27 Jan 6:09 am (GMT +9) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Mito, Mito-shi, Ibaraki, Japan, was reported only 12 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 55.4 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, January 27th, 2022, at 6:09 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mito (pop. 246,500) located 36 km from the epicenter, and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 74 km away.
