Just 15 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Les Cayes, Cayes, Sud, Haiti. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Monday, January 24th, 2022, at 9:27 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Les Cayes (pop. 125,800) located 10 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
