Just 24 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Puerto Escondido, San Pedro Mixtepec -Dto. 22 -, Oaxaca, Mexico. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022, at 10:41 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Llano Grande (pop. 350) located 12 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) located 23 km from the epicenter, Rio Grande (pop. 12,900) 25 km away, Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) 27 km away, Santos Reyes Nopala (pop. 5,200) 34 km away, San Gabriel Mixtepec (pop. 3,500) 36 km away, and Santiago Yaitepec (pop. 4,100) 43 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Catarina Juquila (pop. 6,200) located 44 km from the epicenter, and San Miguel Panixtlahuaca (pop. 5,700) 48 km away.
