Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 79 km southeast of Oaxaca, Mexico 5.1 quake 79 km southeast of Oaxaca, Mexico, Mar 1, 2022 1:35 pm (GMT -6) A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported around noon near Oaxaca, Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Tuesday, March 1st, 2022, at 1:35 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.4, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Santa Maria Zoquitlan (pop. 1,700) located 11 km from the epicenter, San Cristobal (pop. 4,100) 25 km away, and Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) 39 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Ocotlan de Morelos (pop. 15,000) located 54 km from the epicenter, San Antonio de la Cal (pop. 20,200) 75 km away, Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan (pop. 67,100) 77 km away, Oaxaca (pop. 255,000) 79 km away, Crucecita (pop. 15,100) 83 km away, and Santa Maria Azompa (pop. 21,800) 86 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
