Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 72 km southeast of Hihifo, Tonga early morning

An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred early morning on Saturday, April 30th, 2022, at 3:00 am local time near Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hihifo (pop. 820) located 72 km from the epicenter.
