Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 35 km northeast of Portoviejo, Ecuador in the morning

The Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Ecuador near Portoviejo, Cantón Portoviejo, Provincia de Manabi, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday, June 10th, 2022, at 8:28 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Tosagua (pop. 14,700) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Calceta (pop. 17,300) located 18 km from the epicenter, Caracas (pop. 37,100) 23 km away, Chone (pop. 44,800) 25 km away, and Portoviejo (pop. 170,300) 35 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Montecristi (pop. 18,400) located 49 km from the epicenter, Manta (pop. 183,200) 50 km away, and Sucre (pop. 15,300) 58 km away.
