Small 3.4 quake hits near Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star, Alaska, USA3.4 quake 17 Jun 11:20 am (GMT -8) A magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star, Alaska, USA, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 6.8 miles beneath the epicenter in the morning on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at 11:20 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include South Van Horn (pop. 560) located 24 miles from the epicenter, Badger (pop. 19,500) 26 miles away, Ester (pop. 2,400) 26 miles away, Fairbanks (pop. 32,300) 26 miles away, North Pole (pop. 2,200) 26 miles away, and College (pop. 13,000) 27 miles away. In Eielson Air Force Base (pop. 2,600, 30 miles away), Farmers Loop (pop. 4,900, 31 miles away), Salcha (pop. 1,100, 31 miles away), and Healy (pop. 1000, 52 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
