Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 33 km northwest of San Jose, Costa Rica in the morning 4.6 quake 16 Jun 9:36 am (GMT -6) Just 21 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near San Jose, San José, Provincia de San José, Costa Rica. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Thursday, June 16th, 2022, at 9:36 am local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 58 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Atenas (pop. 7,000) located 5 km from the epicenter, Alajuela (pop. 47,500) 17 km away, San Rafael Abajo (pop. 27,400) 23 km away, Mercedes (pop. 26,000) 26 km away, San Francisco (pop. 55,900) 27 km away, San Rafael (pop. 25,400) 28 km away, Heredia (pop. 21,900) 28 km away, San Jose (pop. 335,000) 33 km away, Ciudad Quesada (pop. 27,300) 34 km away, and San Vicente (pop. 34,400) 36 km away.
