Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Ipiales, Municipio de Ipiales, Departamento de Nariño, Colombia

An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred late at night on Tuesday, June 21st, 2022, at 11:50 pm local time near Ipiales, Municipio de Ipiales, Departamento de Nariño, Colombia, as reported by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Cumbal (pop. 7,500) located 21 km from the epicenter, and Tulcan (pop. 86,500) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Gabriel (pop. 15,100) located 32 km from the epicenter, Pupiales (pop. 6,800) 37 km away, Ipiales (pop. 77,700) 37 km away, Tuquerres (pop. 20,200) 47 km away, Otavalo (pop. 32,300) 76 km away, and Pasto (pop. 382,200) 87 km away.
