Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 25 km northeast of Nuevo Imperial, Peru 4.7 quake 19 Jul 1:56 am (GMT -5) An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early morning on Tuesday, July 19th, 2022, at 1:56 am local time near Nuevo Imperial, Provincia de Cañete, Lima region, Peru, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 70.8 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pacaran (pop. 920) located 13 km from the epicenter, Nuevo Imperial (pop. 32,300) 25 km away, Imperial (pop. 32,300) 26 km away, Imperial (pop. 32,300) 26 km away, and San Vicente de Cañete (pop. 25,500) 30 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Chincha Alta (pop. 153,100) located 56 km from the epicenter, Mala (pop. 17,300) 57 km away, and Pisco (pop. 61,900) 90 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
