Magnitude 3.1 earthquake strikes near San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA 3.1 quake 27 Aug 12:42 pm (GMT -7) An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred around noon on Saturday, August 27th, 2022, at 12:42 pm local time near San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 4.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include East Foothills (pop. 8,300) located 6 miles from the epicenter, San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) 10 miles away, Milpitas (pop. 77,600) 12 miles away, Santa Clara (pop. 126,200) 13 miles away, Campbell (pop. 41,100) 14 miles away, Cupertino (pop. 60,600) 18 miles away, and seonibeil (pop. 151,800) 18 miles away. In Fremont (pop. 232,200, 20 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
