Small magnitude 3.0 earthquake 1 miles south of Pāhala, Hawaii, United States

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.0 quake in the United States near Pāhala, Hawaii County, Hawaii, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Friday, August 26th, 2022, at 6:59 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 20 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Pāhala (pop. 1,400, 1 mile away), Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 20 miles away), Volcano Village (pop. 2,600, 24 miles away), Mountain View (pop. 3,900, 35 miles away), Holualoa (pop. 8,500, 43 miles away), Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400, 43 miles away), Hilo (pop. 43,300, 45 miles away), and Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000, 46 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
