Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Vanuatu near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, only 26 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022, at 3:22 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Norsup (pop. 3,000) located 96 km from the epicenter, Lakatoro (pop. 710) 97 km away, Santo (pop. 13,400) 98 km away, and Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) 120 km away.
